i_gwilymjonesMartin studied at Chetham’s School of Music, the Royal College of Music and Indiana University, receiving scholarships to each of these institutions. His main teachers were Maeve Broderick, Itzhak Rashkovsky and Miriam Fried. Martin has won numerous prizes and awards including the W.H. Reed Prize from the Royal College of Music, Sir James Caird Award, an English Speaking Union Fellowship, Welsh Arts Council Scholarship, Jerwood Foundation Scholarship and the Entrecasteaux International Chamber Music Competition. He was awarded an Artist Diploma from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music where he also took Mimi Zweig’s violin pedagogy course studying the methods of Suziki, Galamian and Gingold amongst others. Upon return to the UK he was a teaching assistant to Prof. Itzhak Rashkovsky for several years.

Martin regularly plays with many of Britain’s leading orchestras, he has been a guest leader of the Orchestra of English National Opera and is a member of Britten Sinfonia and John-Eliot Gardiner’s Orchestre Revolutionaire et Romantique. He has been a guest principal with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Halle, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Scottish Chamber Orchestra and also plays with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields.

Martin Gwilym-Jones has taken part in performances as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician throughout Europe, North and South America, Asia and Australia in halls ranging from Carnegie to your local village. These include appearances on television and radio and at festivals such as Apeldoorn, Bowdoin, Pablo Casals, Consonances, Keshet Eilon, Norfolk/Yale and Prussia Cove Open Chamber Music. In Chamber Music he has collaborated with many musicians including Philippe Graffin, Matt Haimowitz, Ernst Kovacic, and the pianist Jason Ridgway as part of a regular duo partnership. Recent concerto appearances include a performance of Vivaldi with the Britten Sinfonia and trying out the Viola in Britten’s Lachrymae for a project with the Richard Alston Dance Company.
