Andrew Stamatakis-Brown

Andy Stamatakis-Brown studied on the Joint Course at the RNCM and Manchester University, receiving his UG diploma in composition and PG in ensemble performance as well as the RNCM Gold Medal in 2004. His first major band, 6pac, received the Peter Whittingham Award for an Innovative Jazz Project in 2004 and his compositions have been performed across Europe, Australia and the USA. He currently leads the Andy Stamatakis-Brown trio, plays in Manchester-based manouche non-purists, Gypsies of Bohemia, and plays piano and synthesisers for Hacienda Classical – a project in which classic dance tunes from the now infamous nightclub are performed by a live orchestra. With these groups and others he has performed at festivals including Glastonbury, Oslo Jazz festival, Shambala and Festival Number 6. He also plays piano in and composes for the 10-piece Manchester Jazz Collective, which formed the backbone of the ensemble for Cottonopolis, Andy’s Irwin Mitchell mjf originals 2017 commission for Manchester Jazz Festival.

Andy is an Advanced Musicianship teacher and Centre Manager for Yorkshire Young Musicians, where he has taught for the past 12 years. He also is composition tutor for A-level music students at Loreto sixth form College in Manchester. He has delivered outreach and community work for Live music Now!, Music in Hospitals, Streetwise Opera, Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Leeds College of Music, Music for Life, Sing Out and Lancashire Sinfonietta. He has been course director for Dartington Summer Youth Music Programme’s jazz course and has taught at Bryanston on the LSG international summer course since 2004.
