Musicianship-Aural,Sight-singing and Theory

These Courses help students explore aspects of Music which are essential in supporting their individual lessons on their instruments.

These popular and highly successful Musicianship Classes which Joan Taylor has run at Bryanston for the past 10 years have now been transferred to an online platform.

In small groups, selected through age and ability, students will participate actively through games, clapping, singing and short written tasks. Power Point presentations will now lead to question and answer and discussion.

The musical material will be culturally sensitive and diverse so that the classes have an inclusive feel. Joan Taylor has taught classes in French and German ,as well as in English, and other language speakers are warmly welcome to the class.

By the end of the course the children can expect to have

1. Developed a firmer sense of Tonality (key) and pitching of intervals,

through singing at sight, using both solfege and Kodaly Hand gestures.

2. Enhanced their ability to keep a steady pulse and understand rhythmic patterns and time signatures.

3. Developed Aural Training skills including an ability to reproduce short fragments of music accurately and also to isolate aurally, and reproduce, upper or lower parts of music with more confidence.

4. Covered Examination requirements for the aural and sight singing sections of the Associated Board Grade Examinations (Grades 1-5). Including an understanding of style ,and of differences between music from different historical periods.

5. Understood the basic facts behind the topics for the Associated Board Grade 5 Theory Examination (if appropriate.to the children in the class )

Joan’s approach is inclusive and interactive. She feels it is essential to present theory in a lively and positive way with plenty of time for the students to query and discuss the topics ,to aid clarification and understanding. The members of the group will be encouraged to suggests theory topics they have found challenging( or a mystery!) themselves.

The Course will therefore have the flexibility to include the student’s own interests and difficulties. (These can be sent to Joan before or during the Course.)

Students will need a paper and pencil to hand and it may be possible to use the student’s own instrument during the Course to illustrate an aspect of theory. This would highlight the important link between practical and theoretical study.
